LIGHTS FORM ACTION! explores the relationship between light, geometry, and movement through the sculptural works of Los Angeles–based artist Ashoke Chhabra. In these striking illuminated forms, light is not an accessory but an essential element of the sculpture itself. Working in harmony with carefully constructed geometric structures, light defines shape, creates depth, and establishes a visual rhythm that gives each piece its distinctive character. Drawing inspiration from the bold geometry of Bauhaus and modernist design, Chhabra transforms rigid materials into fluid, expressive compositions that appear to twist, bend, and move through space.

.

At the heart of the exhibition is Chhabra’s Chaos Series, a collection of layered, angular sculptures that challenge traditional notions of symmetry and stability. Working primarily with Baltic birch plywood and acrylic, he employs a modular approach to construction, joining, stacking, twisting, and reversing components of varying scales to create intricate, unexpected forms. The resulting compositions evoke both architectural structures and organic formations, revealing a delicate balance between precision and spontaneity. Chhabra describes his creative process as a non-linear “series of failures, happy accidents, and modest victories,” where experimentation and discovery are as essential as craftsmanship.

.

Light plays a defining role in bringing these sculptural forms to life. Nestled within each hollow structure, illumination accentuates the intricate geometry while softening the visual weight of the materials. As Chhabra explains, “Lights are beacons. Lights are dynamic. They draw our gaze.” Through this interplay of light and structure, forms that might otherwise appear heavy or imposing take on an unexpected sense of warmth, movement, and ethereal presence.

.

With more than two decades of experience designing and building custom furniture and lighting, Chhabra brings a distinctive perspective to contemporary sculpture. Originally trained in music composition, he approaches his work with an intuitive understanding of rhythm, repetition, and variation. These musical sensibilities find expression in sculptures whose shifting angles and layered forms suggest movement through space. His award-winning creations invite viewers to look beyond the physical structure and experience light as an active force that transforms our perception of form, space, and movement.
