Glendale Arts is pleased to present Lumia: A Light Within, a solo exhibition by Armenian-American artist Seda Saar, on view from June 21-July 19, 2025. The public is invited to the Opening Reception on Saturday, June 21 from 6:00–8:00pm to meet the artist and toast the show’s opening with wine and light refreshments.
Lumia: A Light Within explores the material and spiritual dimensions of light through sculpture, painting, and installation. Rooted in geometric abstraction and inspired by Saar’s background in architecture and energy medicine, the works engage viewers in an immersive journey through color, reflection, and perception.
At the heart of the exhibition is a series of dynamic sculptural forms – such as Chroma Column and Aurora Nova – which refract and reflect light, activating space with vibrant spectral energy. Saar’s layered paintings, including Chroma Waves, Orbits, and Chroma Synthesis, extend this inquiry into the optical and emotional resonance of color.
Together, the works invite moments of contemplation, echoing the mystical interplay between the inner and outer worlds.
“These works are not just about seeing,” says Saar, “but about sensing. Each surface, hue, and reflection act as a portal into presence, inviting the viewer to inhabit the liminal space between the material and the immaterial.”
The exhibition title Lumia – a term coined by light artist Thomas Wilfred – honors the lineage of the Light and Space movement while reimagining it through a contemporary, spiritually attuned lens. Saar’s practice carries echoes of artists like Robert Irwin and James Turrell, yet grounds itself in a unique fusion of cultural memory, phenomenology, and poetic abstraction.
ace/121 Gallery is open from Wednesday – Saturday from 11:00am-5:00pm.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work explores the interplay between nature, geometry, and human perception. I investigate the relationship between organic renewal and structured forms, constructing environments that invite the viewer into meditative spaces where illusion and reality co exist. Drawing from science, technology, and the subconscious, I aim to create a dialogue about our connection to the universe and the infinite quest for knowledge.
